"Wreaked" paper final

This is my paper for the final, it accompanies the picture “wreaked”

I titled my picture “Wreaked” because I think it represents society today. When you’re young, particularly in high school, there is pressure to fit in. There are so many social circles, so many different paths to take. In high school, people change a lot. Who you are as a freshman is completely different than who you are as a senior. Someone may change who they are completely just to try and fit in amongst a certain group of people.

That is where I got the inspiration for my picture from.

Someone may, in a sense, put on a mask, a fake personality, to make people see them a certain way. High School students do this all the time, everything is fake, and everyone seems to be acting. But once and a while, a little bit of the real person shows through. A crack begins to appear in the glossy, fake mask that person has put on. Reality starts to take its toll. A person cannot live behind the mask forever. Eventually, there real self is going to come out. And over time, more and more cracks appear, more and more of the real person starts to show.

In most cases, people try and patch up the crack, seal the hole, and resume the acting. No one has the courage to stand up and realize that they could be happier, that they could do more of what they really love, if they just ended the fakeness. In high school, this comes out as stress. Stress of trying to be something you’re not, stress of trying to be ‘perfect’ for your group, stress of constantly putting on a show. But every once in a while, you get someone who, as soon as a crack shows, they realize something. They realize that this is stupid, that they shouldn’t need to hide who they are behind something they are trying to be.

Every once in a while, you get someone who is willing to stand up and take off the mask. They are the ones who do a complete 180 and turn it all around. They reveal the beautiful and completely honest person they are underneath. They sometimes get ridiculed for it, beaten up, pushed aside, knocked down. But people need to realize that this new person is still the same human being, just not the fake one from before. The acting is gone, the mask is gone, and what’s left is the real person underneath. People get angry, saying that they want the ‘old’ them back. But what they don’t understand is that the old them was never really there. It was all a trick, like pulling a bunny out of a hat, or cutting a man in half.

The real person is always better, no matter what other people say. It’s always better to be the person you are, not the person you seem to be.

This myth is based on a story in irish folklore. The creature is called a Morrgann. She was a mythological figure who had the ability to take the face of any one of her sisters. The Morrgann was actually a combination of three people. One representing death, one representing war, and another representing sovereignty and glory. She was often transparent and ghostly.
